"And the Lord raised up in Israel a savior, a great man, a
tower of strength, and erudite and powerful debater, a man of valiant
courageous heart, the scholar and great rabbi R. Isaac Campanton of blessed
memory , and he restored priests to the their worship and Levites to the
pulpit, and the Jewish people to its standing and he restored (its) former
glory and strength, and he educated many students and put a siyag (fence)around
the Torah.
He had four great students and friends from whom everyone imbided the good and living waters (the teachings) which are committed to writing. The name of the first polemicist, the great scholar and keen casuist was R. Isaac Aboab (II) of blessed memory… the scholar R. Isaac de León… R. Joseph Hayyun of blessed memory… and the fourth, the following fruitful bountiful waters of the Euphrates, the scholar R. Simeon… and from the four learning went forth to Spain and Portugal and the western land.

had it not been for them, Torah learning would have ceased".
